PAMSys – Physical Activity Monitoring

PAMSys is a unique, precise platform for objective evaluation of physical activity during everyday life. Developed by BioSensics and based upon the Shimmer platform, the patent-pending PAMSys technology uses advanced signal processing algorithms and novel biomechanical models of human motion to identify the complete physical activity map of the user from data measured by a single portable, light-weight PAMSys motion sensor.

About PAMSys

Using PAMSys, clinicians, physical therapists and other health-care professionals can obtain information about their clients’:

  • Posture (sitting, standing, walking, running, lying and the lying position),
  • Gait parameters (number of episodes of walking and the speed, duration and number of steps for each episode; correlation between gait speed and duration; steady state gait parameters; the intra-day variability of gait parameters; the average gait speed and total walking steps).
  • Postural transition parameters (number per day, its average duration, and its intra-day variability)

Clinical applications of PAMSys platform include:

  • Objective outcome evaluation of rehabilitation, treatments, prescribed drugs, and medical interventions
  • Objective assessment of quality of life
  • Pain management
  • Weight management
  • Assessment of risk of falling in older adults via home monitoring
  • Diabetic foot ulcer management via controlling dosage of activity and activity organization

Evaluation of Physical Activity

The images below shows a typical set up and analysis results of a person’s daily physical activity using PAMSys (about 49 hours continuous monitoring). In addition to the calculated results, the raw data gathered by the PAMSy system can be easily accessed and saved for customized post-processing. The PAMSys platform is designed with ease of use in mind and requires minimum amount of training to operate.
